Dealing with School Papers

School ended last week, for us. And the end of school means PILES of papers coming home. Blech! I wanted to show you how we deal with all those papers throughout the year.

Throughout the year I use these magazine boxes to coral all the stuff. The blue box on the right holds our mail/bills, the middle box has magazines and coupons, and the green box on the left has all the school stuff I’ve snagged throughout the year to go in my long term keep file. This is sort of the transition box. It lives in our high traffic area so when things come home that I know I want to keep it goes in here for now, then later in the year I’ll move it to the long term file box. And lucky for me…later is NOW. πŸ™‚

Our bench in the front room has three drawers. Each child has one that he dumps school stuff into. Right now it’s looking like this. Makes me tired just looking at it!

And my son’s desk is looking like this. Oh my! We need some help!

Here’s where my process begins. I have this plastic file box that all the keep stuff goes in. There is a hanging file folder for each child and each year. RIght now both boys are in one box, but I expect that someday we’ll have to move to one box per child.

My very first step is to purge…HEAVILY! I only keep a few pieces from each year and MOST of it goes in the trash. Once I’ve purged I start to file the keepers away. Here’s what you’ll find in each pocket.

At the front of the folder I store the school photos from that year. I make sure the date is written somewhere on the envelope so that if it gets pulled out later I know where it goes.

I also include any sports portraits in the front of the folder.

I love to keep several pieces of writing. Especially anything that speaks to my son’s perspective on his life. I love going through and re-reading these pieces!

I’m lucky when it comes to art because my son’s art teacher uses ArtsoniaΒ to upload the children’s art work. So I have digital versions of most of his art from the school year. So I only keep a few of my favorite pieces in the folder. I plan to download the digital versions and create a shutterfly art book for him (probably at the end of his elementary career).

Gotta have the grade cards in there! I keep each quarter’s grade card and stick it in the folder. The 4th quarter grade card will go in his School of Life album.

I include a few math papers as well! Especially the ones that showcase how brilliant my boy is! πŸ™‚ I didn’t photograph it but there are some spelling tests in here also.

And then if there are any programs or certificates they go in the back of the folder.

Doesn’t that drawer look better?

And there actually are desks under there! Wowzers! Feels so good to get those papers under control.

How do you handle the flood of school stuff?
