Bench Makeover

Several years ago my uncle made my family this amazing bench. It fit perfectly with the decor at our old house. See it sitting under the window?

I was really excited when I saw how it fit under the window in our new house. It looks like it was designed to be there right?!?

But with the new homework area, this bench needed a facelift. The colors just don’t match the rest of the new house. So off to the store I went to pick up some supplies!

Along with plywood I bought this adorable fabric, some batting, 2 inch foam, and several cans of Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint.

I hauled the pieces outside and placed them on an old sheet. Well most of them made it on the sheet. 🙂

I began spraying away. In the end I put two coats on each piece inside and out. I didn’t worry about the backs or the bottoms cause no one would ever see those.

Since I had the plywood cut to size at Lowes I had an extra piece. I put that piece underneath my foam so that I had something to cut against, and wouldn’t accidentally get my carpet!

I have these super sharp scissors so I just placed the plywood (cut to fit the top of the bench) on top of the foam and ran the scissors along the edge.

Once the foam was cut to size I put down the material, the batting, and then put the foam and plywood on top. Now it’s time to wrap and staple!

I cut the corners at an angle so that there wouldn’t be too much bulk.

I stapled the center of each side and then started stapling all the way around, pulling things tight as I went along.

Then I followed the same process with the fabric. I just love the graphic design and colors! Pretty! 🙂

By the time I was done it had gotten fairly dark outside, so I apologize for the yellow tone on this pic! But the top was done and ready to go. Once the base was dry I brought it in the house and put everything together.

And here it is! LOVE the new colors! And since this room is the warmest one in the house, I love reading a book curled up on this bench. Perfect for waiting for my boy to get off the bus!
